Pakistan Poultry Industry

Poultry industry has very strong line in Industrial sector of Pakistan. The poultry industry grown in last few decades and today take pleasure in the rank of the second largest industry of Pakistan after textile. Few decades ago there was no concept of commercial poultry in Pakistan. It was the start of 6th decade of the 20th century, when the Government of Pakistan felt the need of intensive Poultry rearing program by keeping in view the increased demand of white meat due to heavy growth in our population. So, it was in 1962 when Commercial Poultry was initially introduced in Pakistan by M/S Shaver’s of Canada with the help of PIA and that led to the formation of the PIA Shaver with the poultry sector. In its embryonic stages became a blue eyed to the government officials and the rearing or any kind of business relating poultry was announced to be Tax exempted. The first hatchery was then established in Karachi. Our government supported poultry industry in all aspects that helped the industry to develop rapidly.

According to Pakistan Poultry Association, the Commercial Poultry in Pakistan was established in 1962. It is one of the largest agro based segment of Pakistan having an investment of more than 750 Billion rupees. Poultry Industry of Pakistan is making a tremendous contribution in bridging the gap between supply and demand of meat protein. With the continuous depletion of supply of red meat, poultry is the cheapest available animal protein source for our masses and as such is an effective check upon the spiraling animal protein prices. Therefore we are already consuming less protein as per required standards. Poultry Industry generates employment and provides source of income to more than 1.5 million people of Pakistan directly & indirectly. Poultry sector is one of the most organized branches of the agro based sector of Pakistan. Its growth rate is 10-12% per annum. At present over 190 billion rupees worth of agriculture produce and by products of agriculture are being used in poultry feeds. There are over 15000 poultry farms spread deep into the rural areas across the country from Karachi to Peshawar .Capacity of farms range from 5,000 to 500,000 broilers.
